Most office lunches end the same way. Someone passes around a box of sweets, everyone takes one, and by four in the afternoon the whole floor is yawning. We wanted a dessert that fits into a workday instead of fighting it, so this week we added a Protein Banana Cake to the Carb Theory corporate catering menu in Bangalore.
This post covers what is in it, what an 80g slice adds up to, and why we think a slightly higher protein dessert makes sense for workplace meals.
What is in the Protein Banana Cake
The ingredient list is deliberately short:
- Ripe banana
- Whole-wheat flour
- Whey protein
- Greek yogurt
- Walnuts
- Cinnamon
- Honey
- Monk fruit
Ripe banana does most of the work. It brings natural sweetness and keeps the crumb moist, which means we can use less added sweetener than a regular cake. Whole-wheat flour replaces refined flour as the base.
Whey protein and Greek yogurt are where the protein comes from. Whey blends into the batter without changing the texture much, and Greek yogurt keeps the cake soft and adds a little tang that works well with banana.
Walnuts give the cake some bite and a bit of richness. Cinnamon rounds out the banana flavour. A small amount of honey and monk fruit tops up the sweetness so the cake tastes like dessert and not like a protein bar.
Nutrition per 80g slice
These are our kitchen figures for the recipe as we make it. Treat them as approximate, since bananas and portions vary a little from batch to batch.
- Calories: about 200 kcal
- Protein: about 15g
- Carbohydrates: about 28g
- Fat: about 6g
- Fibre: about 1g
For context, that is a dessert portion that also happens to carry a useful amount of protein, which is rare. It pairs well with black coffee or tea for an afternoon break.
Why a higher protein dessert makes sense at work
Most of the people we serve sit at a desk for the better part of the day. The meals that work best for that routine are the ones that keep energy steady rather than spiking it. A dessert built on whole-wheat flour, fruit and dairy protein is a better fit for that than one built on refined flour and sugar alone.
There is a practical side too. Office meals are delivered, not plated on the spot. A cake like this holds up well in a meal box for a few hours, does not need reheating, and does not go soggy or collapse in transit. That makes it easy to include in a lunch box or as a standalone afternoon snack for a team.
Ways to serve it in an office
A few ideas that we have seen work:
- As the dessert in a set corporate lunch, alongside a balanced main.
- As a 4pm snack delivery for teams that work late or have long meetings.
- With coffee at a morning stand-up or town hall instead of biscuits.
- As a lighter option at internal events, where a full sweet spread tends to go untouched by the afternoon.
Because the slice is portioned at 80g, it is easy to plan quantities per head without leftovers.
